Eric's Modern O-Scale Trains
MTH Engines & Rolling Stock
Engines | Rolling Stock | Back to Modern Trains
As you've probably noticed, MTH (Mike's Train House) trains make up the majority of my collection. Ever since I was introduced to MTH's DCS control system I've been a die-hard fan of their stuff. For being a mass producer of trains, MTH consistently puts out a quality product and they are very technologically innovative and clever. I also think that their DCS control system is a superior product and their engines always run like a dream. The main reason I like them so much, however, is because MTH makes more modern era engines, rolling stock and accessories than anybody else out there. Most train makers tend to focus on steam or early diesel era trains and may offer a few modern era items here and there. MTH, on the other hand, offers page after page of modern engines and rolling stock in every catalog they put out.

MTH 20-2233-1 Southern Pacific FM Trainmaster Diesel Engine w/Proto-Sound 2.0
I love these old, ugly rectangular diesel engines so I decided to add some to my fleet. True, they are not modern and you would probably never see these still in service today, but it's my set so I'm free to take a little artistic license here and there. To help make them a little more plausible, I will try to get the older engines in some of the older liveries of roads that got merged into current roads. On that note, I started off with this SP unit. SP, as you probably know, was merged into Union Pacific so this fits in with my plan. You can still see engines with the SP livery every now and then on today's roads. This is a 2000 model, added to my set in March of 2006. |
MTH 20-2267-1 Norfolk & Southern #9010 Dash-9 Diesel Engine w/Proto-Sound 2.0
The first digital engine added to my set. The digital command system (DCS) that MTH makes to accompany this engine is just spectacular. It's built in proto-sound 2.0 elements make it really hard to imagine anything closer to the real thing. I was introduced to DCS and purchased this engine at Legacy Station, a great train store just outside of Atlanta. You can check out video of this train in action right here. This is a 2000 model, added to my set in July of 2005. |
MTH 20-2375-1 CSX #789 "Spirit of Nashville" SD70 Mac Diesel Engine w/Proto-Sound 2.0
The SD70 is one of my favorite engines in real life, mostly due to the fact that I've actually stood on the steps of one. You just have no concept of how big the real life engines are until you're standing next to one. They're not just big, their unbelievably big! The "Spirit of Nashville" livery on this engine was not mentioned in the product description or clearly visible in the image on MTH's website, so I was pleasantly surprised when I opened the box. This is a 2002 model, added to my layout in February of 2006. |
MTH 20-2385-1 Union Pacific #7515 AC6000 Diesel Engine w/Proto-Sound 2.0
This is one of my favorites for sure. For starters, it's huge. The engine sounds are really cool and the horn and cab chatter on this unit are my favorite of all my engines so far, and the double smoke stack looks badass as it pours out smoke. You can see video of this engine in actions right here. This is a 2002 model that was added to my fleet in February of 2006. |
MTH 20-2385-3 Union Pacific #7529 AC6000 Diesel Engine (Non-Powered)
The unpowered brother of the UP AC6000 above. MTH now makes lighting kits for the unpowered units, so I've got one on order for this one. |
MTH 20-2474-1 Norfolk Southern #7215 SD-80 Diesel Engine w/Proto-Sound 2.0
Absolutely amazing looking. At 20.5 inches long, this is the largest powered engine in my fleet. The green and red lights on the front and back add to the realism of this beast. I picked this beauty up from a store called "The Train Loft" up in Winston-Salem, NC. The Train Loft is quickly becoming a favorite store of mine since its owner, Jeff, specializes in Union Pacific items. He's got tons of UP engines and rolling stock, and he's always a pleasure to buy from. I'm sure I will be adding lots of stuff from his store into my fleet. This is a 2004 model that I added to my layout in February of 2006. |
MTH 20-2474-1 Norfolk Southern #7210 SD-80 Diesel Engine (Non-Powered)
The unpowered brother to the NS SD-80 above. I've added an MTH lighting kit to this unit to make it look more realistic. |
MTH 20-2492-1 Norfolk Southern #5555 GP38-2 Diesel Engine w/Proto-Sound 2.0
This was the first "smaller" full size engine that I got for the layout. At around 15 inches, it takes the curves like a champ! It will be cool when I can have a lash-up of 4 or 5 of these little gems. This is a 2004 model, added to my set in Feb. 2006. |
MTH 20-2501-1 Union Pacific #1121 Alco S-2 Switcher Diesel Engine w/Proto-Sound 2.0
Since Union Pacific is one of my favorite roads, I thought it appropriate to have a UP switcher in the yard. This is nice heavy piece and is my favorite switcher in my fleet at this time. It looks so nice and the sound effects on it are really well done. Check out video of this engine in action on right here. This is a 2004 model, added to my set in December of 2005. |
MTH 20-2503-1 Union Pacific #8556 SD090MAC Diesel Engine w/Proto-Sound 2.0
I originally got the unpowered version of this model to accompany the Lionel UP SD70 that I got for Christmas. However, I liked it so much that I just had to get the powered version to complete the set. It's an amazingly beautiful engine and the sound effects on it are superb. This is a 2004 model and was added to my set in February of 2006. |
MTH 20-2503-3 Union Pacific #8560 SD090MAC Diesel Engine (Non-Powered)
The unpowered partner to the Union Pacific SD90 above. |
MTH 20-2507-1 BNSF #5811 AC6000 Diesel Engine w/Proto-Sound 2.0
This is the first BNSF engine to join my fleet! I've got a pair of UP AC6000's that I'm very fond of, so that's why I was happy to make an AC6000 the inaugural BNSF engine in my fleet. The horn on these AC6000's is amazingly realistic. I've always loved the BNSF paint scheme and even my fiance says this one is a beautiful piece. I'm sure I will get the unpowered partner to this engine at some point. I've made a video of this engine in action, which you can view by clicking here. This is a 2004 model and was added to my fleet in March of 2006. |
MTH 20-2534-1 Union Pacific #2020 GP38-2 Diesel Engine w/Proto-Sound 2.0
These little GP38's run so great around the 0-42 curves on my layout and never have problems with switches (turnouts). I usually tend to like bigger engines, but these little guys have changed my mind. You can check out a video of this engine in action right here. This is a 2004 model, added to my layout in Feb. 2006. |
MTH 20-2534-3 Union Pacific #2037 GP38-2 Diesel Engine (Non-Powered)
The unpowered partner to the UP GP38-2 above. |
MTH 20-2573-1 CSX #8765 SD60M Diesel Engine w/Proto-Sound 2.0
This purchase was originally for a BNSF SD40-2. However, when I got the SD40-2 home, it didn't work very well at slow speeds (very jerky). I took it back to the store and, to my surprise, found that a replacement had the same issue. That had me wondering if perhaps the SD40-2 model from MTH has some sort of defect in it, so I decided to choose another engine. Since I chose the BNSF engine based on what I'd seen in the yard behind my place, I went with this CSX for the same reason. CSX has a good photo of #8765 right here, and this engine is still active in the CSX fleet. This is a 2005 model that was adding to my fleet in December 2005. |
MTH 20-2573-3 CSX #8768 SD60M Diesel Engine (Non-Powered)
The unpowered partner the CSX SD60M above. This was my first unpowered engine purchase. |
MTH 20-2621-1 CSX SD70ACe Diesel Engine w/Proto-Sound 2.0 (on order)
I've got this new 2006 engine on order at a local MTH dealer. I can't wait! |
MTH 20-2621-3 CSX SD70ACe Diesel Engine (Non-Powered) (on order)
Just like the above unit, but unpowered. On order from MTH. |
MTH 20-2620-1 BNSF SD70ACe Diesel Engine w/Proto-Sound 2.0
The first engine to come in from my 2006 catalog order. These new SD70ACe's are amazing looking. This engine gave me my first look at the new brake cylinder detailing they've added to the trucks of their new diesels. The paint scheme is perfect! It was worth the wait. You can check out a video of this engine in action right here. This is a 2006 model, added to my set in December of the same year. |
MTH 20-2620-1 BNSF SD70ACe Diesel Engine (Non-Powered)
Just like the one above, but non-powered. This is a 2006 model, added to my set in December of the same year. |
MTH 20-2623-1 Norfolk Southern SD70M-2 Diesel Engine w/Proto-Sound 2.0
Amazing details make these SD70's so awesome. You can check out a video of this engine in action right here. This is a 2005 model, added to my set in July of 2007. |
MTH 20-2623-3 Norfolk Southern SD70M-2 Diesel Engine (Non-Powered)
Just like the one above, but non-powered. This is a 2005 model, added to my set in July of 2007. |
MTH 20-2644-1 Norfolk Southern Dash-8 40C Narrow Nose Diesel Engine w/Proto-Sound 2.0
This 2006 vol. 1 catalog order finally arrived in October of 2008. I'd say it was worth the wait. Very nicely done. The standout feature on this engine is the sound set. It sounds unlike any other engine I have and the start-up and shut-down sounds are first rate. Well done, MTH. |
MTH 20-2644-3 Norfolk Southern Dash-8 40C Narrow Nose Diesel Engine (Non-Powered)
The unpowered sister to the Dash-8 above. This is a 2006 model, added to my set in October of 2008. |
MTH 20-2693-1 Union Pacific SD40-2T Tunnel Motor #2843
This engine represents my first full weathering job on one of my engines. I was having trouble finding the nerve to weather any of my engines until an accident led me to weather this piece. Not long after I got this engine, I accidentally spilled a small amount of super glue on one side. With a permanent scar on the side of the engine, I was naturally quite frustrated at first but then turned that frustration into opportunity and told myself "well, the engine is no longer is perfect condition anyway so I might as well weather the thing". Not only did the weathering hide the super glue damage, but it gave the engine a very realistic and well worn look that I'm quite proud of now. Railroads usually keep their engines in decent shape, so I avoided any rust weathering and stuck to using only dirt and grime weathering, which is exactly what would cover an engine in active service. Now that I've gotten over the fear of weathering an engine, I'm sure this won't be the last engine that gets a nice coat of grime! Aside from the weathering, I really like this engine. The unusual hood vents on the back make this engine stand out. My only criticism is that the engine does not have the ditch lights that the prototype has. This is a 2006 model, added to my set in March of 2008. |
MTH 20-2693-1 Union Pacific SD40-2T Tunnel Motor #2834
Just like the tunnel motor above, but a different road number. I weathered this engine to match the one above, but with slightly less dirt and grime. I now have these 2 running around in lash-up configuration on the layout. Great engines! This is a 2006 MTH model, added to my set in March of 2008. |
MTH 20-2704-1 Southern GP-9 Diesel Engine w/Proto-Sound 2.0
Part of my 2006 Vol. 2 catalog order. This beautiful engine is a bit out of place with most of my modern engines, but I couldn't resist picking one up. You can still see GP-9's on the roads every now and then, so thre's still a place for it on my layout. This is a 2006 model, added to my set in October of 2007. |
MTH 20-2704-3 Southern GP-9 Diesel Engine (Non-Powered)
Just like the one above, but non-powered. This is a 2006 model, added to my set in October of 2007. |
MTH 20-2711-1 Conrail SD70Mac Diesel Engine w/Proto-Sound 2.0
One of the last pieces of my 2006 catalog order to come in. I really like to paint job on this piece. Looks and sounds incredible! I especially like the idling sound. It's sorta hypnotic. You can check out a video of this engine in action right here. This is a 2006 model, added to my set in April of 2007. |
MTH 20-2711-3 Conrail SD70Mac Diesel Engine (Non-Powered)
The non-powered version of the SD70Mac above. This is a 2006 model, added to my set in April of 2007. |
MTH 20-2769-1 Chicago Northwestern SD70ACe Diesel Heritage Set w/Proto-Sound 2.0
The 7th and final Heritage Set to be added to my collection, this is just as well done and amazing to look at as the others below. Made in 2007, added to my set in October of 2008. |
MTH 20-2770-1 Denver Rio Grande Western SD70ACe Diesel Heritage Set w/Proto-Sound 2.0
The outstanding paint job on this engine makes it a real beauty. It's got a fantastic sound set as well. You can check out video of this engine in action right here. This engine was made in 2007 and added to my collection in October of 2007. |
MTH 20-2771-1 Missouri Pacific SD70ACe Diesel Heritage Set w/Proto-Sound 2.0
When I first saw the picture of this set in the MTH catalog, I wasn't that impressed. The blue color seemed a bit unattractive. Months later, however, I was able to see a prototype at an Atlanta train show and I was very impressed with its appearance. So naturally, I picked one up in my quest to eventually get all the Heritage engines. Check out video of this engine in action right here. Made in 2007, added to my set in July 2007. |
MTH 20-2772-1 M-K-T "The Katy" SD70ACe Diesel Heritage Set w/Proto-Sound 2.0
This is probably my favorite of the 7 Heritage sets that MTH made for 2007. The bold red and the star on the front are just plain cool. The sound effects are equally as cool. You can check out a video of this engine in action right here. Made in 2007, added to my set in July 2007. |
MTH 20-2773-1 Southern Pacific SD70ACe Diesel Heritage Set w/Proto-Sound 2.0
The paint scheme on this set is very striking. This ws the 6th out of the 7 Heritage Series engines to be added to my set. The final addition will be the CNW Heritage Set. Made in 2007, added to my set in May of 2008. |
MTH 20-2774-1 Union Pacific SD70ACe Diesel Heritage Set w/Proto-Sound 2.0
The first of the UP heritage set from the 2007 vol. 1 catalog to arrive! There are 7 sets in all, the others being Western Pacific, MKT, Chicago & Northwestern, Southern Pacific, MoPac and DRGW. The engine, the boxcar and the caboose are all perfect! The sound effects on this engine are fantastic, particuarly the start up sounds and the horn. I can't wait for the other versions to arrive! I've got close-ups of the boxcar and caboose down the rolling stock section of this page. Made in 2007, added to my set in June of 2007. |
MTH 20-2775-1 Western Pacific SD70ACe Diesel Heritage Set w/Proto-Sound 2.0
Perfect, perfect, perfect. The whole heritage series is a home run in my opinion. Made in 2007, added to my set in October of the same year. |
MTH 20-2789-1 CP Rail AC4400CW #9506 Diesel Engine w/Proto-Sound 2.0
Part of my 2007 vol. 2 order, this is gorgeous engine. The start-up sound sequence on this engine is probably one of the best I've heard out of an MTH engine. I was also going to get an unpowered version of this engine, but my dealer had to return the unpowered unit because it was damaged during shipping. I opted to get a second powered unit instead, as seen below. You can check out video of this engine in action by clicking here. This is 2007 engine, added to my set in January of 2008. |
MTH 20-2789-1 CP Rail AC4400CW #9545 Diesel Engine w/Proto-Sound 2.0
Sister engine to the one above. Very nice sounds and the bold red color looks really nice. This is a 2007 engine, added to my set in June of 2008. |
MTH 20-2827-1 Montana Rail Link SD70ACe #4308 Diesel Engine w/Proto-Sound 2.0
From my 2007 vol. 2 catalog order. These Montana Rail Link engines are so beautiful. I'm so glad a ordered these. In addition to being quite nice to look at, I like the fact that MRL is a pretty obscure roadname in O-gauge railroading which makes these engines more unique and special. The sound sets for these engines is incredible. Made in 2007, added to my collection in April of 2008. |
MTH 20-2827-1 Montana Rail Link SD70ACe #4304 Diesel Engine w/Proto-Sound 2.0
Just like the MRL SD70ACe above, but a different road number. Made in 2007, added to my set in April 2008. |
MTH 20-2827-3 Montana Rail Link SD70ACe #4304 Diesel Engine (Non-Powered)
The unpowered counterpart to the 2 MRL SD70's above. Made in 2007, added to my set in April 2008. |
MTH 20-2834-1 Norfolk Southern AC6000 #7450 Diesel Engine w/Proto-Sound 2.0
Part of my 2008 Vol. 1 order, this is a beautiful engine. The start up sounds are wonderful. Made in 2008, added to my set in November of the same year. You can check out video of this engine in action right here. |
MTH 20-2834-3 Norfolk Southern AC6000 #7470 Diesel Engine (Non-Powered)
This is the first non-powered MTH engine to be added to my collection that came with lighting installed. It has an on/off switch under the hood so that you can turn off the lights if you want. Made in 2008, added to my set in November of the same year. |
RailKing 30-1433-1 Silver Bullet Train Set w/Proto-Sound 2.0
I usually try to stay with more prototypical stuff, but I just couldn't resist when I saw this train in the 2007 Vol. 1 MTH catalog. The set itself is amazing looking and the sounds are incredible. The opening doors on the box cars with the smoke/cold effect are reall neat too. MTH deserves to make a lot of money off this set. They really put some thought into it. You can see a close up of the box cars down below in the rolling stock section of this page. You can check out a video of this engine in action right here. This is a 2007 model, added to my set in November of 2007. |
RailKing 30-2261-3
CSX #1116 SW-1500 Switcher Diesel Engine (Non-Powered)
This 2002 model is a little hard to find, so I was quick to snatch up the non-powered unit when I found it at a store in Ohio. I'm sure I'll add the powered unit eventually. I was inspired to get this piece after seeing these for real at the Inman yard here in Atlanta. Check out the tinted cab windows! Added to my set in March of 2006. |
RailKing 30-2393-1 Norfolk Southern #2203 Switch Diesel Engine w/Proto-Sound 2.0
I saw a couple of these in the big Norfolk Southern yard west of downtown Atlanta and I instantly wanted one for my layout. However, this 2003 model is EXTREMELY hard to find. I was able to find 1 dealer, Paragon, Ltd. Trains in Piedmont, SC, who still had 1 unit left of both the powered and non powered versions! I instantly called the store and snatched them up without a second thought. Piedmont, as it turns out, is only about 2 hours from Atlanta so we took a little day-trip up to South Carolina to pick these up! The fact that my fiance was not only willing, but excited to drive a total of 4 hours just for an engine is just one of the many reasons I married her! Anyway, Paragon is run by a guy named Doug and he specializes in Southern and Norfolk Southern road names. He's got some really cool Norfolk Southern freight cars, so I picked up an operating signalman car and a set of spine cars before it was all over with. From the Live Steam train that runs around the property (self built and self machined) to the observatory from which Doug has taken interstellar photographs, Paragon is one cool store and is definitely worth a visit. If you end up paying Paragon a visit, make sure you either bring cash or your check book because they do not take credit/debit cards. You can check out video of this switcher in action right here. |
RailKing 30-2393-3 Norfolk Southern #2307 Switcher Diesel Engine (Non-Powered)
Just like the one above, but unpowered. I've added an MTH lighing kit to this unit. |
RailKing 30-2422-1 CSX #7071 C30-7 Diesel Engine w/Proto-Sound 2.0
The CSX intermodal yard behind my place, quite naturally, is full of CSX engines all the time, so I will usually get any CSX engine I can lay my hands on. The situation in which I got this one was a surprise. I went to Chicago with my fiance for a business trip. On a day off, she indulged me and we went to a local train store where I found this little jewel for a good price and ended up coming home with it. This was the 2nd MTH engine added to my set. Like most RailKing models, this unit lacks a little of the extra detailing that you would find on a Premier line version, but it's nothing that takes away from this being a very attractive piece. This is a 2004 model, and I added it November of 2005. |
RailKing 30-2422-3 CSX #7070 C30-7 Diesel Engine (Non-Powered)
The non-powered partner to the CSX C30-7 above. |
RailKing 30-2433-3 Conrail #6847 SD60 Diesel Engine (Non-Powered)
Seeing as Norfolk Southern and CSX took over most of Conrail's operations and since I still see occasional Conrail engines on both CSX and NS tracks, I thought it fitting to add some more realism to my layout by including an few Conrail engines in my fleet. This non-powered SD60, which I won on ebay, is the first piece in that plan. I should have an SD40-2 coming in another month or so. This is a 2004 model, added to my layout in March of 2006. |
RailKing 30-2615-1 Baltimore & Ohio SW-9 Switcher Diesel Engine
I ordered this directly from MTH. It came in a couple months late, but it was worth the wait. It's quiet a lovely piece. I chose this one before I had really settled on using Union Pacific, CSX, Norfolk Southern and BSNF for most of my diesel fleet, so it's a little out of place. But then again, B&O was eventually merged into CSX so I guess there's a plausible connection. This is a 2005 model that I finally received in February of 2006. |
RailKing 30-2724-1 CSX SW1500 Switcher Diesel Engine
Part of my 2006 MTH catalog order, these switchers will make a fine addition to the yard. They are semi-scale and are nicely detailed as well. I was inspired to buy these when I saw the exact same models (and almost the same cab numbers) at the Inman Yard near downtown Atlanta. Made in 2006, added to my set in February 2007. |
RailKing 30-2724-3 CSX SW1500 Switcher Diesel Engine (Non-Powered)
Just like the one above, but non-powered. Made in 2006, added to my set in February 2007. |
RailKing 30-2748-1 Norfolk Southern SW!500 Switcher Diesel Engine w/Proto-Sound 2.0
Inspired by the real life version I've seen in the NS yard downtown. A perfect little switcher. Made in 2007, added to my set in December 2007. |
MTH/RailKing Rolling Stock (140 items, sorted by model number)

Made in 2007, added to my set in May of 2008. |
MTH 20-2774A Union Pacific Heritage Set 50' Hi-Cube Box Car
As if the heritage series engines aren't enough, you get a box car and caboose as icing on the cake. Very nicely done. This hi-cube car is the same body as the TTX hi-cube set below. Made in 2007, added to my set in June 2007. |
MTH 20-2774B Union Pacific Heritage Set Extended Vision Caboose
In addition to the box car above, this caboose also came with the UP heritage set. I'm not huge on cabooses, but this is a very nice piece regardless. What's awesome about this caboose is that the inside is detailed with crew figures and seats, so you don't have to look at a bunch of wires and bulbs. Made in 2007, added to my set in June 2007. |
MTH 20-2775A Western Pacific Heritage Set 50' Hi-Cube Box Car
Made in 2007, added to my set in October 2007. |

MTH 20-9701L Burlington Northern O Scale Coal Porter Hopper
I picked this up while attending my first ever train show over in Norcross, GA. I didn't think the train show was that great, but at least I got a nice car out of it. This car was made in 1997 and added to my set in November 2006. |

MTH 20-90270 6-Car TTX 50' High Cube Box Car Set
This was part of my 2006 catalog order. I'd been waiting a long time for these and I gotta say it was 100% worth the wait. They are so incredible! I ordered both sets, so now I've got 12 of these bad boys! The paint scheme is crisp and the detailing is very well done. These are definitely up there on my favorites list. I took a couple extra pictures to show them off a bit. These were made by MTH in 2006, and added to my set in January of 2007.
Car Numbers: 504112, 504115, 504119, 504120, 504122, 504126 |
MTH 20-90271 6-Car TTX 50' High Cube Box Car Set
Just like the 6-car set above, but different numbers. Made in 2006, added to my set in January 2007.
Car Numbers: 504060, 504061, 504064, 504066, 504069, 504072 |
MTH 20-90277 6-Car Burlington Northern 50' High Cube Box Car Set
More of MTH's High Cube boxcars, but with the Burlington Northern pain scheme. These high cube cars are awesome, so you can never have to many of them. I may eventually add the 20-90276 set, which would give me 12 of these. Made in 2006, added to my set in July 2007.
Car Numbers: 376891, 376893, 376898, 376899, 376901, 376904 |
MTH 20-90321 6-Car Conrail Coalporter Hopper Car Set
This set was part of my 2006 vol. 2 order from MTH. These are intricately detailed and look so great with all 6 cars lined up. I'm now pretty much limiting my freight purchases to matched sets whenever possible, so this is a part of that strategy. These were made in 2006 and added to my set in March of 2007. |
MTH 20-90334 Canadian National 6-Car 100 Ton Hopper Car Set
This set was first item from my MTH 2007 vol. 1 order to arrive. They are very nicely done and look so great with 6 of them lined up. This is a 2007 set, added to my collection in April 2007. |
MTH 20-90365 CSX 5-car Twin Stack Container Set
I'm convinced that this set is MTH's answer to Atlas' amazing Gunderson Twin Stack sets. Considering that it's pretty damn near impossible to beat Atlas' Twin Stacks (or anything Atlas makes, for that matter), I think MTH did a very good job. The detailing is very well done. One area where the MTH version falls short is that most of the model is plastic whereas most of the Atlas model is die-cast metal. MTH's model, however, does offer a couple nice advantages over the Atlas version. First, I personally like the way MTH did the fasteners that couple each car together. They're much easier to work than the Atlas versions. Secondly, I like that the MTH version comes with the container loads. The Atlas model does not come with the containers. They have to bought seperately for $25 piece. Purists will probably argue that the Atlas car fasterners are more prototypical and that allowing you to buy the containers seperately allows for more customization, but I'm not a purist. I think MTH did a good all-around job with these and I'm happy to own them. This is a 2007 model, added to my set in August of 2008. |
MTH 20-90408 Railbox 6-Car 50' Box Car Set
I think Weaver did a great job with their Railbox cars, so my hopes were not very high for MTH's version. I figured theirs would be sorta like Lionel's in that is was a little bigger than the Weaver models. To my surprise, these are actually more like the Weaver cars, so I'm very pleased. They look right at home riding alongside the Weaver Railbox cars that I already had. Made in 2008, added to my set in November of 2008. |
MTH 20-91249 Montana Rail Link Extended Vision Caboose
A nice companion to the MRL SD70ACe's that I have, this is a nicely done caboose. This is a 2008 model, added to my set in October of the same year. |
MTH 20-91263 Chessie Steel Caboose (MTHRRC 2008)
MTH's 2008 club car. Nicely done. Made in 2008, added to my set in April of the same year. |
MTH 20-93254 Atlanta Braves Double Door 50' Box Car
My little boy likes the Braves, so I got this car with him in mind. Being a premier model, it's quite a nice car. This car was built in 2005 and added to my set in November 2006. |
MTH 20-93302 Wisconsin & Southern (#503052) 50' Dbl. Door Plugged Boxcar
This car was in the first batch to come in from my 2006 MTH catalog order. It's quite a beautiful car! Built in 2006, added to my set in November of the same year. |
MTH 20-93334 NASA 50' High Cube Box Car
I've developed an interest in NASA rolling stock for some reason, so I picked this up from The Train Loft. It's very nicely decorated and stands out in a crowd. Made in 2006, added to my set in December 2007. |
MTH 20-93336 Conrail 50' Waffle Box Car #223110
I bought this car and the one below off of ebay. Although the seller has listed them as being in "like new" condition, when I received them I found that the roofs of both cars had recently been repainted silver instead of the white that the cars came with. I was a little upset that the seller misled me about them, but seeing as I was about the weather both of these cars, I didn't get too bent out of shape. They looks pretty nice now that they are fully weathered. Made in 2006, added to my set in April of 2008. |
MTH 20-93336 Conrail 50' Waffle Box Car #223113
Just like the boxcar above, but with a different road number. Made in 2006, added to my set in April of 2008. |
MTH 20-93340 Chessie Box Car #23750
My wife got me this car for my 32nd birthday! I had thought about getting some Chessie stuff for some time, and a birthday present seemed like to perfect time to do it. Very nice car. This is a 2006 car, added to my set in January of 2008. |
MTH 20-93360 Norfolk Southern 50' High Cube Box Car #473343
This high cube car and the one below were part of my 2007 Vol. 1 order. Like the other high cube cars that MTH is cranking out these days, these are really pretty pieces. Made in 2007, added to my collection in August of the same year. |
MTH 20-93360 Norfolk Southern 50' High Cube Box Car #473346
Just like the hig cub car above, but a different road number. Made in 2007, added to my collection in August of the same year. |
MTH 20-93418 TCA Spring York 2008 40' Box Car
MTH's souvenir car from the Spring York 2008 train show. I didn't make it to York, but I picked this up from the MTH online club store for $25. Made in 2008 and added to my set in May of the same year. |
MTH 20-93432 TCA Fall York 2008 40' Box Car
MTH's souvenir car from the Fall York 2008 train meet. It was available to MTHRRC members for $25, so I picked it up. Made in 2008 and added to my set in October of 2008. |
MTH 20-94058 Conrail 40' Reefer Car
I decide9d to add some Conrail items to my fleet, so I snagged this car and several others off of ebay. It's quite a nice looking car and I like the paint scheme as well. This is a 2003 model, added to my set in March of 2006. |

MTH 20-94060 Milwaukee Road Operating Reefer Car
This was the very first M.T.H. freight car that I bought. It's amazing! When the car is activated, via a control track, the door slowly opens and a man uses a dolly to pick up a package of dry ice and unload it onto the ramp. As if that's not cool enough, it comes with a smoke unit built in. But the smoke unit is not for your typical "smoke". When activated, the smoke units put out its smoke to make it look as is vapor is coming off of the dry ice containers inside the car! Simply Incredible! I was already sold on M.T.H. locomotives and now I'm sold on his rolling stock.

MTH 20-94097 Tropicana Operating Reefer Car
Just like the operating reefer car above, but with Tropicana livery. Very cool, and inspired by some Tropicana reefers that I saw in the CSX intermodal yard. A 2005 model, added to my set in April 2006. |
MTH 20-95007 Union Pacific Husky Stack Car
This is a 1998 made car that I picked up on ebay for about $30. This was the first real car that I weathered with an airbrush. I think I did a pretty good job in making it look nice and dirty. I'm sure I'll get better with time though. |
MTH 20-95049 2-car Norfolk Southern Spine Car Set w/(2) 48' Containers
I picked these up at Paragon Trains in Piedmont, SC. We took a day-trip to South Carolina to pick up a set of hard to find NS switchers. It turned out that Paragon specializes in Southern and Norfolk Southern roads, so I was able to pick up some extra NS freight rolling stock while I was there...including this set. This is a 2005 model, added to my layout in Feb. 2006. |
MTH 20-95053 BNSF Husky Stack Car
I see these exact cars behind our place all the time, so naturally I picked this up when I saw it. One of the 2 containers is weighted, giving the car a nice and heavy feel. It's a 2005 model, added to my set in April of 2006. |
MTH 20-95059 BNSF Husky Stack Car
This Husky Stack and 3 that follow all came from my 2006 vol. 2 MTH order. They are very nicely done. I like that each car has 1 full size container and 2 half containers underneath. I've seen these exact cars roll through Atlanta a million times, so it's nice to have something so prototypical in my set. Made in 2006, added to my set in March 2007. |
MTH 20-95060 Coe Rail Husky Stack Car
Made in 2006, added to my set in March 2007. |
MTH 20-95061 CSX Husky Stack Car
Made in 2006, added to my set in March 2007. |
MTH 20-95062 Maersk Husky Stack Car
Made in 2006, added to my set in March 2007. |
MTH 20-96116 CSX #63855 8000 Gallon Tank Car
I've got a ton of tank cars, but this one stands out as being one of the prettiest, in my opinion. It looks very modern and realistic. I particularly like the detailed warning diamonds, which signal this car's attention to detail. I think I will try to get the other car number that MTH made of this model. This is a 2005 car, added to my layout in March of 2006. |
MTH 20-96161 CSX Tank Car # 993364
Part of my 2007 Vol. 1 order. I was motivated to get these 2 fuel tender tankers after seeing their real life counterparts at the CSX Inman yard in downtown Atlanta. Very nicely built. Made in 2007, added to my set in August of the same year. |
MTH 20-96161 CSX Tank Car #993368
Just like the tanker above, but with a different road number. Made in 2007, added to my set in August of the same year. |
MTH 20-96165 Tropicana Funnel Flow Tank Car #828
From my 2007 vol. 2 catalog order. Nicely done cars. Added to my set in March of 2008. |
MTH 20-96165 Tropicana Funnel Flow Tank Car #825
Just like the tanker above, but with a different road number. Added to my set in March of 2008. |
MTH 20-96168 Denver Rio Grande Tank Car
Part of the Union Pacific Heritage Series, I couldn't resist picking this baby up. Made in 2007, added to my collection in December of the same year. |
MTH 20-97168 Southern #280257 Ps-2 Hopper
More stuff from my 2006 MTH catalog order. These little fellas are really done well and will make a nice addition to the layout. This photo was the first train picture I took in the basement of our new house! This is a 2006 model, added to my set in December of the same year |
MTH 20-97168 Southern #280259 Ps-2 Hopper
Just like the car above, but a different car number. Made in 2006, added to my set in December of the same year. |
MTH 20-97200 Waddell Coal 2-Bay Fish Belly Hopper Car w/Coal (MTHRRC 2007)
This is the 2007 MTH Rail Roading Club car issued to members. It's a bit out of place in my modern themed collection, but it's still very nice. The opening hatches on the bottom add a nice touch realism. This is a 2007 car, added to my set in August of the same year. |
MTH 20-97461 Great Northern 3-Bay Cylindrical Hopper
This car was my first ebay buy of an MTH product. It's big and blue! This is a 2002 model, added to my set in October of 2005. |
MTH 20-97501 Southern Wood Chip Hopper Car
I got this on ebay for $16. When it arrived, one of the trucks was broken off from the car. I fixed that with some super-glue. I later weathered this car and I also glued sawdust to the wood load to give the car a more realistic look. This car was built in 1998 and added to my collection sometime in 2005. |
MTH 20-97531 CSX 3-Bay Centerflow Hopper #256435
Like much of the stuff I've been getting lately, this car is meant to match some of the stuff I've seen in the CSX intermodal yard behind the loft apartment we used to live in. Built in 2004, added to my set in November of 2005. |
MTH 20-97651 MKT 2-Bay Centerflow Hopper #15088
Part of the MTH's "Heritage Series", I figured these would go nicely with my MKT Heritage SD70ACe. Built in 2008, added to my set in October of 2008. |
MTH 20-97651 MKT 2-Bay Centerflow Hopper #15084
Just like the one above, but a different road number. Built in 2008, added to my set in October of 2008. |
MTH 20-98205 Union Pacific Jordan Spreader
This is such an interesting looking car, I couldn't resist buying it. The roads use these, obviously, as snow plows in the winter. However, I've learned that they also have other uses in the warmer months of the year, such as maintaining drainage ditches and so forth. The photo of this car on MTH's website does NOT show the black & white striping on the front, but only solid yellow. I'm guessing that this is because MTH added the stripes after the catalogs had already gone out. Another odd thing is that the real life UP #903143 is noticeably different looking than this rendition. This is a 1998 model, added to my set in April of 2006. |
MTH 20-98211 CSX Center Bean Flat Car w/Log Load
Very big and very nice looking. I picked this up on ebay during a search for CSX rolling stock. It's very well done! This is a 1998 model, added to my set in February of 2007. |
MTH 20-98215 Union Pacific Die-Cast Test Car
MTH doesn't make all the MoW equipment I'd like them to make, but what they do make they always do a great job on. In real life, these scale test cars are used to calibrate the train scales. I found a picture of a few of these on Railroad Picture Archives and MTH replicated the UP version very well. If only MTH would make other MoW equipment like speeders and ballast tampers! I can see it now..."Union Pacific ballast tamper with Proto-Sound 2.0"...wow that would rule! This is a 1999 model, added to my set in March of 2006. |
MTH 20-98257 #ETTX852332 CSX Corrugated Auto Carrier
Trying to emulate what I see on the rails around Atlanta, I picked this big fella up. These auto carriers are built well and nicely detailed. They aren't quite as detailed as the Atlas auto carriers, but I still love them. This is a 2001 model, added to my set in July of 2006. |
MTH 20-98365 MTA #941422 Flat Car w/Yellow R-17 Subway Car
Quite a nice set. The subway car on top is a fully functioning car, making the whole deal pretty heavy. Built in 2003 and added to my collection in July of 2006. |
MTH 20-98407 Union Pacific #701206 Corrugated Auto Carrier
These things are huge. They are 20 inches long and over 5 inches tall! I was inspired to buy these 2 carriers because the exact same Union Pacific carriers roll through the CSX yard behind my house all the time. True to their real-life counterparts, these cars are much bigger than any other cars on the track. In fact, the cars have signage all over themselves stating that they exceed normal car size! These cars are intricately detailed and a site to behold. This is a 2004 model, added to my set in November 2005. |
MTH 20-98407 Union Pacific #701210 Corrugated Auto Carrier
Just like its twin above, but with a different car number for extra authenticity. I can't get over how cool these 2 carriers are. I think I'll have to get a couple more before it's all said and done. The only bad thing about these giants is that they are almost too big for my layout. Unless you've got a lot of O-81 curves on your set, these things are going to hang way over the curves. On a tiny O-31 curve, they almost look silly. I snapped this picture of a real UP auto carrier as it came through the CSX yard behind my old loft apartment in downtown Atlanta. Made in 2004, added to my layout in November 2005. |
MTH 20-98430 Southern (#62925) Coil Car
I had really never heard of a coil car prior to a few weeks before I got this car. Evidently these cars carry large spools, or coils, or wire and/or metal to wherever they might be needed. This is nicely built car with a good weight and with little plastic coils of metal under the lid for a touch of added realism. I specifically chose this Southern version of the coil car to match other Southern cars that I'm adding to my collection. Purchased Nov. 2005. |
MTH 20-98483 NASA 75' AutoTrain Auto Carrier
I found one of these at the Train Loft in North Carolina and thought it would go well with my small but growing collection of NASA related trains. Made in 2005, added to my set in November of 2008. |
MTH 20-98511 TTX (#131002) 47' Heavy Duty Flat Car
This car and it's brother below were in the first batch to come in from my 2006 catalog order. They are amazing cars and I know that my intermodal containers will look great riding on them. Built in 2006, added to my collection in November of 2006. |
MTH 20-98511 TTX (#131004) 47' Heavy Duty Flat Car
The companion to the car above. Built in 2006, added to my collection in November of 2006. |
MTH 20-98540 NASA 47' TTX Heavy Duty Flat Car w/Cover
From the 2006 vol. 2 MTH catalog, this wasn't originally part of my order but I liked it so much that I picked it up once they shipped. I like it mainly because it's just unusual. I will probably add a few other NASA cars to my collection before too long. This is a 2006 model, added to my set in April 2007. |
MTH 20-98577 Norfolk Southern Schnabel Flatcar
My wife gave this to me for Christmas 2007. This is one beast of a car, coming in at 23.5 inches in length. Wonderfully detailed and a pleasure to run. Made in 2007 and added to my set in December of 2007. |
MTH 20-98579 47' TTX Heavy Duty Flat Car w/SW-1500 Locomotive
This was part of my 2007 vol. 1 MTH order and it finally shipped in February of 2008. This car was a great deal. Normally, an unpowered switcher engine alone costs around $130. With this set, you get a really nice flat car plus the unpowered switcher for the same $130! In addition to being a great deal, however, it's also a really nice looking car and quite an eye catcher. This is a 2007 model, added to my set in March of 2008. |
MTH 20-98584 Union Pacific 60' Flat Car w/Trash Containers
From my 2007 vol. 1 catalog order. A nicely built car, and having a train car full of trash give a nice modern day touch to my set. Made in 2007, added to my set in April of 2008. |
MTH 20-98603 TTX 60' Flat Car w/(2)M1A Abrams Tanks - 6 Car Set
From my 2007 vol. 2 catalog order. This is a badass set. It has a surprising amount of detail available, if you have the time. Not long after opening the boxes, I found that each car comes with 2 coupler cut bars (one for each side of the car) that can be glued into place. The cut bars are left off because they can only be added if you have curves wider than O-54 (which I do, of course). In addition to the cut bars, the cars also come with long chains and load adjusters. You have to cut the chains to the proper length, and then secure them over each tank by fastening them to the load adjusters, which in turn fasten to the floor of the cars. It was quite a bit of work, taking me about 4 or 5 hours to complete all 6 cars, but it was quite worth it as the result was some very realistic looking flat cars. Well done, MTH. Made in 2007, added to my set in April 2008. |
RailKing 30-1433A,B,C Coors Silver Bullet Reefers
This is one of the 3 reefers (A,B,C) that came with the Coors Silver Bullet set. Their doors can be opened and closed using the MTH DCS remote control. Each car has a smoke unit that simulates freezer fog when the doors are opened to reveal the carload of frosty brew. Yeah, it's pretty cool. Made in 2007, added to my set in November of the same year. |
RailKing 30-7147 Union Pacific Stock Car
My inspiration for buying this car was the postwar 6656 Cattle Car that came from my dad's collection. The 6656 looked so lonely all by itself, so I decide to get another cattle car to keep in company! Like everything else MTH makes, this car is quite good looking and solidly built. |
RailKing 30-7147 Union Pacific Stock Car (#2)
Exactly like the one above. I liked it so much, I got another one. I bought this one and the one above in October of 2005. |
RailKing 30-7312 Norfolk Southern Tank Car
Since NS is one of the primary roads I collect, pretty much anything with the Norfolk Southern logo on it is fair game. Like everything else MTH cranks out, this a nice and sturdy tank car. Purchased in November of 2005. |
RailKing 30-73124 Union Pacific 3-Dome Tank Car
This was the 4th MTH freight car that I bought and was one of the factors that made me begin to favor MTH over Lionel. I've grown quite fond of this car and I am thinking about getting 1 or 2 more of the same model. This is a 2004 car, added to my set in October 2005. |
RailKing 30-7338 CSX Modern Tank Car
When we were over in the big CSX Inman yard, west of downtown Atlanta, we saw tons of CSX Fuel Cars. I bought this one on ebay in an attempt to get something like it on my layout. It doesn't look exactly like the ones we saw, but it's a good start. |
RailKing RK-7406L Santa Fe Red & Black Semi-Scale Box Car
This car is basically identical to the 2 brown Lionel 6-19216 Santa Fe box cars I have, except it's a nice bold red color that really looks nice. Added October 2005. |
RailKing 30-7433 Union Pacific 50' Modern Single Door Box Car
This is a very nice looking boxcar that I got brand new off of ebay for around $20. Interestingly, MTH has reissued this car in this year's 2006 catalog as RailKing 30-74332. I like my version better, though, since it has silver trucks instead of the black ones that are on the 2006 model. Not to mention that the new car is $45 in the catalog, so I got this one for more than 50% less. |
RailKing 30-7464 Santa Fe Double Door 50' Box Car
This is a nice double-door version of a few other Santa Fe box cars I have. It's quite a handsome car with attractive detailing and color. I bought this in October of 2005. |
RailKing 30-7469 Union Pacific 50' Double Door Plugged Boxcar
I picked this up on ebay for $25. I can't ever have too much UP rolling stock. Not only do I like UP because I see it all the time in my area, but I also love the colors and the silver trucks that many of the cars have. This is a 2001 model, added to my set in March of 2006. |
RailKing 30-7524 Southern 4 Bay Hopper w/Coal Load
I see these things running around Atlanta all the time, so I figured I'd get a couple. Picked 'em up on ebay for $26 a piece in October of 2005. I really like the way this car looks! |
RailKing 30-7524 Southern 4 Bay Hopper w/Coal Load (#2)
A duplicate of the Southern hopper above. Yeah, both cars have the same number on them but I'm not that anal about stuff like that...at least not yet. If you don't know what I'm referring to, I'm talking about the actual numbers on the car. On these 2 cars, that number is "73464". The numbers on a train car are sorta like license plates on cars. A train enthusiast who is obsessed with realism would not want to have 2 like cars with the same number because in real life that wouldn't happen. |
RailKing 30-7525 Norfolk & Western Hopper Car w/Operating Coal Load
The coal load in this hopper is simply a prop that can't really be unloaded. When the car is activated, however, the coal load in the hopper magically gets lower and lower as if it's really being unloaded! watch quicktime movie |
RailKing 30-7926 Conrail Searchlight Car
This car is very cool. It looks a lot like the old Lionel searchlight car, except that MTH has improved the light mechanism. It's basically outfitted with the same rotating motor found on MTH's remake of Lionel's 394 Rotary Beacon. When the track is energized, the light comes on and spins around continuously. When I first got this car, I was a little peeved that the car did not have a switch on the underside for turning the search light off when it's not in use. However, on closer inspection I found that the car does, in fact, have a switch that is appropriately placed on the little plastic generator on the top of the car! This is a 1999 model, added to my set in March of 2006. |
RailKing 30-7986 CSX American Crane Car
Just like the GN crane below, but with CSX livery. |
RailKing 30-74022 CSX Box Car
As I've said already, there's a big CSX yard in back of the apartment building we used to live in. I tired to get cars that I saw in that yard, so that's where this car and the one below come into play. Nicely built! Purchased November 2005. |
RailKing 30-74022 CSX Box Car (#2)
Exactly like the one above. I'm getting in to a habit of buying more than one of each car, when I find a car I like. I think it adds a measure of realism to a train. Purchased November 2005. |

RailKing 30-74073 Union Pacific Box Car
Another "Route of The Streamliners" car like the Atlas rendition that I have, except this one is the familiar yellow and red colors of Union Pacific. Got this on ebay for $27 in October of 2005. |
RailKing 30-74122 Union Pacific Rounded Roof Boxcar
If there's a car that says Union Pacific on it, I will usually get it. That explains this car. Come to think of it, that explains most of train set. I like the look of this car a lot. The rounded roof adds a little variety into the mix. |

RailKing 30-76074 CSX Flat Car w/Trailer
Seeing as there are so many flat cars of this nature behind my house, I figured I'd pick one up. It's a nicely built car and adds more realism to my layout. Bought November 2005. |
RailKing 30-76138 Southern Husky Stack Car
Like so much of my fleet, I got this car because I see these things all the time in the CSX intermodal yard. |
RailKing 30-78040 Silver Bullet Operating Reefer
Part of my 2007 Vol. 1 catalog order, this is add-on reefer car for the Coors Light Silver Bullet train set (above). Made in 2007, added to my set in June of 2008. |
RailKing 30-78061 Coors Operating Reefer Car Tail
Part of my 2008 vol. 1 catalog order, this is the final tail car that can be added onto the Silver Bullet train. Looks great! Made in 2008, added to my set in November of the same year. |
RailKing 30-79004 Union Pacific Fire Car
I haven't seen a lot of these around, so I snatched this up when I found it. It's just a neat little car, with all sorts of detail on it. It's got a little more plastic than I would like, but it's still a great car. This is a 1999 model, added to my set in March of 2006. |
RailKing 30-79032 Great Northern American Crane Car
This is a nice series that MTH has come out with. I couldn't resist picking one up when I saw this at a local train store here in Atlanta. Added to my collection in October 2005. |
RailKing 30-79045 Conrail Hopper Car w/Operating Coal Load
I got this while on a Conrail kick. It's a nice looking car and the animated coal load is pretty sweet. This is a 2003 car, added to my set in March of 2006 |
RailKing 30-79056 Baltimore & Ohio Operating Box Car w/Signal Man
This was my second MTH rolling stock purchase. MTH's operating cars are so much smoother than Lionel's. The slow and fluid motion as the door opens and the man comes out with his lantern is just amazing. This is a 2004 release, added to my layout in September 2005.

RailKing 30-79083 Norfolk Southern Operating Box Car w/Signalman
I picked this up at Paragon Trains in Piedmont, SC while going there to pick up a couple of NS switchers. This was part of a big Norfolk Southern kick I got on when I discovered the huge NS Inman yard here in Atlanta. This is a 2004 model, added to my layout in Feb. 2006. |
RailKing 30-79091 Alaska Operating Flat Car w/Logs
I picked this car up outside of Chicago while on a business trip. It's a 2005 model and I picked it up in November of the same year. This log dump car is much better looking than the Lionel counterpart, in my opinion. |
RailKing 30-8214 New Haven Die-Cast 4-Bay Hopper w/Coal Load
This big and heavy beauty really stands out with its bold orange color. It definitely will add some pep to the layout. Bought in October 2005. |
