Atlas 1816-1 Union Pacfic MP-15DC Diesel Switcher #1340 w/TMCC

I thought it couldn't get much better than the SD40's that Atlas put out last year, but they've proven me wrong again. These MP15's are simply amazing. The detail is out of this world. For example, the inside of the cab not only comes with 2 figures but also has a console with lights. The best part about this switcher, however, is the fact that it has FIXED PILOTS! Excellent job! I'm so sold on Atlas. You can check out a video of this engine in action right here. Built in 2008, added to my set in December of the same year.

MTH 20-20013-1E Union Pacific AC4400CW Diesel Engine #5774 w/Proto-Sound 2.0

This is the engine that leads the 20-20013 NASA Solid Rocket Motor Transport Set. From MTH's 2010 Vol. 1 catalog. Great Set!

MTH 20-20167-1 Union Pacific Veranda Turbine Freight Set w/PS 3.0

A beautiful set which contains the Veranda turbine, 4 box cars and a caboose. Made in 2011, added to my set in November of 2013.

MTH 20-20344-1 E-6 ABA Diesel Engine Set With Proto-Sound 3.0

A beautiful diesel set. Great sounds! Made in 2014, added to my set in August of 2015.

MTH 20-2501-1 Union Pacific #1121 Alco S-2 Switcher Diesel Engine w/Proto-Sound 2.0

Since Union Pacific is one of my favorite roads, I thought it appropriate to have a UP switcher in the yard. This is nice heavy piece and is my favorite switcher in my fleet at this time. It looks so nice and the sound effects on it are really well done. Check out video of this engine in action on right here. This is a 2004 model, added to my set in December of 2005.

MTH 20-2534-3 Union Pacific #2037 GP38-2 Diesel Engine (Non-Powered)

The unpowered partner to the UP GP38-2 above.

MTH 20-2693-1 Union Pacific SD40-2T Tunnel Motor #2843

This engine represents my first full weathering job on one of my engines. I was having trouble finding the nerve to weather any of my engines until an accident led me to weather this piece. Not long after I got this engine, I accidentally spilled a small amount of super glue on one side. With a permanent scar on the side of the engine, I was naturally quite frustrated at first but then turned that frustration into opportunity and told myself "well, the engine is no longer is perfect condition anyway so I might as well weather the thing". Not only did the weathering hide the super glue damage, but it gave the engine a very realistic and well worn look that I'm quite proud of now. Railroads usually keep their engines in decent shape, so I avoided any rust weathering and stuck to using only dirt and grime weathering, which is exactly what would cover an engine in active service. Now that I've gotten over the fear of weathering an engine, I'm sure this won't be the last engine that gets a nice coat of grime! Aside from the weathering, I really like this engine. The unusual hood vents on the back make this engine stand out. My only criticism is that the engine does not have the ditch lights that the prototype has. This is a 2006 model, added to my set in March of 2008.

MTH 20-2693-1 Union Pacific SD40-2T Tunnel Motor #2834

Just like the tunnel motor above, but a different road number. I weathered this engine to match the one above, but with slightly less dirt and grime. I now have these 2 running around in lash-up configuration on the layout. Great engines! This is a 2006 MTH model, added to my set in March of 2008.

MTH 20-2769-1 Chicago Northwestern SD70ACe Diesel Heritage Set w/Proto-Sound 2.0

The 7th and final Heritage Set to be added to my collection, this is just as well done and amazing to look at as the others below. Made in 2007, added to my set in October of 2008.

MTH 20-2770-1 Denver Rio Grande Western SD70ACe Diesel Heritage Set w/Proto-Sound 2.0

The outstanding paint job on this engine makes it a real beauty. It's got a fantastic sound set as well. You can check out video of this engine in action right here. This engine was made in 2007 and added to my collection in October of 2007.

MTH 20-2771-1 Missouri Pacific SD70ACe Diesel Heritage Set w/Proto-Sound 2.0

When I first saw the picture of this set in the MTH catalog, I wasn't that impressed. The blue color seemed a bit unattractive. Months later, however, I was able to see a prototype at an Atlanta train show and I was very impressed with its appearance. So naturally, I picked one up in my quest to eventually get all the Heritage engines. Check out video of this engine in action right here. Made in 2007, added to my set in July 2007.

MTH 20-2772-1 M-K-T "The Katy" SD70ACe Diesel Heritage Set w/Proto-Sound 2.0

This is probably my favorite of the 7 Heritage sets that MTH made for 2007. The bold red and the star on the front are just plain cool. The sound effects are equally as cool. You can check out a video of this engine in action right here. Made in 2007, added to my set in July 2007.

MTH 20-2773-1 Southern Pacific SD70ACe Diesel Heritage Set w/Proto-Sound 2.0

The paint scheme on this set is very striking. This ws the 6th out of the 7 Heritage Series engines to be added to my set. The final addition will be the CNW Heritage Set. Made in 2007, added to my set in May of 2008.

MTH 20-2774-1 Union Pacific SD70ACe Diesel Heritage Set w/Proto-Sound 2.0

The first of the UP heritage set from the 2007 vol. 1 catalog to arrive! There are 7 sets in all, the others being Western Pacific, MKT, Chicago & Northwestern, Southern Pacific, MoPac and DRGW. The engine, the boxcar and the caboose are all perfect! The sound effects on this engine are fantastic, particuarly the start up sounds and the horn. I can't wait for the other versions to arrive! I've got close-ups of the boxcar and caboose down the rolling stock section of this page. Made in 2007, added to my set in June of 2007

MTH 20-2775-1 Western Pacific SD70ACe Diesel Heritage Set w/Proto-Sound 2.0

Perfect, perfect, perfect. The whole heritage series is a home run in my opinion. Made in 2007, added to my set in October of the same year.

MTH 20-2911-1 Union Pacfic SD40-2 #3593 Diesel Engine w/Proto-Sound 2.0

I was excited to get this engine, but when I opened it up it was a bit of a let down because of the awful color that used to paint it. Instead of it being a tan/brown camouflage, it's more of a pink/down camouflage. I can only assume that the colors were screwed up at the factory. This pinkish engine is almost laughable. It runs well, however, and the sounds et is also very good. If only it weren't pink. Built in 2008, added to my set in December of 2008.

MTH 20-2980-1 Union Pacific DDA40X Diesel Engine #6936 w/ Proto-Sound 2.0

From MTH's 2009 Dealer Appreciation Program, this engine is a monster and is by far the largest engine in my roster. Made in 2009, added to my collection in January of 2010.

MTH 20-3536-1 Union Pacific FEF Northern Express Reefer Set

This is wonderful set consisting of the famous UP FEF Northern, 5 PFE reefers and bay window caboose. Quite stunning and great deal. Made in 2014, added to my collection in June of 2015

MTH 20-3575-1 Union Pacific 4-8-8-4 Big Boy #4014

This engine marks the first time MTH has installed a smoking whistle in any steam engine. It looks great! Made in 2015, added to my collection in December of 2015.

Lionel 6-11220 Vision Line Union Pacific 4-6-6-4 Challlenger

Another homerun for Lionel, this Vision Line Challenger is simply amazing. One of the best steam engines ever made in O-Scale. Click Here to watch this engine in action

Lionel 6-11344 Union Pacific 4-12-2 #X9000 (Greyhound Scheme)

From my 2012 vol. 1 catalog order. The mighty 4-12-2 kicks ass. I chose to get the imaginary greyhound scheme but these were also available in black. Made in 2012, added to my collection in May of 2012.

Lionel 6-11437 Vision Line Union Pacific 4-8-8-4 Big Boy #4014

Yep, here it is. The engine is exactly what a Vision Line engine should be...a technological innovation. Simply awesome. Made in 2014, added to my collection in December of 2014.

Lionel 6-28227 Union Pacific SD-70MAC Diesel Engine w/TMCC

My wife got this for me for Christmas 2005. This was my first TMCC equipped engine.

Lionel 6-28314 Vision Line Union Pacific #2701 3GS21B Genset Switcher

Lionel hit a homerun when the first Vision Line GEVO Hybrid came out earlier this year and they've done it again with the genset switcher. Phenomenal attention to detail, superb sounds and fantastic Legacy control make this another milestone for Lionel. This is a 2009 catalog item, added to my set in October of 2010.

Lionel 6-28347 Union Pacific Boy Scouts 100th Anniversary ES44AC Diesel Engine

A beautiful engine with an all die-cast shell. Made in 2010, added to my set in February 2011.

Lionel 6-28371 Union Pacific DD35A #72 Diesel Engine w/Legacy

I ordered this out of Lionel's 2010 Volume 2 catalog. It looks great, sounds great and runs fantastic. It's huge. Made in 2011, added to my set in January 2012.

Lionel 6-28475 Union Pacific Early Era Inspection Vehicle

It's awesome that they are now able to put TMCC in stuff this small. Made in 2011, added to my collection in June of 2012.

Lionel 6-34673.jpg Vision Line Union Pacific Baldwin Centipede A-A Set #998 & #999

Lionel's 2012 Vision Line offering. Expensive, but fantastic. 46 inches of die-cast metal with 4 motors, 4 smoke units and spinning fans on top of each unit. Made in 2012, added to my set in August of 2012.

Lionel 6-38354 #1464W Union Pacific Anniversary Passenger Set (Alco AA #2023)

This is a reissue of the 2023 anniversary set from 1950. My dad had the original 2023 engines when he was a kid (I've still got those engines), so I decided to get a brand new reissue so that I could see how they looked when they were brand new. The set includes both AA units plus 3 passenger cars. This set does not feature command control, but I will probably add it later. Made in 2012, added to my collection in January of 2013.

Lionel 6-84107 Union Pacific S70ACe #8415

I hadn't picked up a good UP diesel in a while, so I decided to add this to my fleet. Cataloged in 2016, added to my fleet in October of 2017.

Lionel 6-84412 Union Pacific SD60M w/Legacy

Good old Union Pacific. Can't go wrong with it. Great engine. Made in 2017, added to my collection in February of 2018.

Lionel 6-84635 UNION PACIFIC (DRGW) SD40T-2 #8593

Love the paint job on this baby. Cataloged in 2017, added to my collection in November of 2018.

MTH 20-2773B Southern Pacific Heritage Set Extended Vision Caboose

Made in 2007, added to my set in May of 2008.

MTH 20-2774A Union Pacific Heritage Set 50' Hi-Cube Box Car

As if the heritage series engines aren't enough, you get a box car and caboose as icing on the cake. Very nicely done. This hi-cube car is the same body as the TTX hi-cube set below. Made in 2007, added to my set in June 2007.

MTH 20-2774B Union Pacific Heritage Set Extended Vision Caboose

In addition to the box car above, this caboose also came with the UP heritage set. I'm not huge on cabooses, but this is a very nice piece regardless. What's awesome about this caboose is that the inside is detailed with crew figures and seats, so you don't have to look at a bunch of wires and bulbs. Made in 2007, added to my set in June 2007.

MTH 20-2775A Western Pacific Heritage Set 50' Hi-Cube Box Car

Made in 2007, added to my set in October 2007.

MTH 20-65147 Union Pacific 70' "Promontory" Baggage Car (2009 Dealer Appreciation Program)

This was my first modern passenger set in my collection. From MTH's 2009 Dealer Appreciation Program, these cars are meant to be run with the UP DDA40X diesel engine above (which was also part of the 2009 DAP). The five cars that come with this set are: #5779 Promontory (baggage), #5473 Portland Ros (coach), #5480 Sunshine Special (coach), #5011 City of Denver (diner), #203 Idaho (observation). A very nice set. Added to my collection in March of 2010.

MTH 20-65147 Union Pacific 70' "Portland Rose" Coach Car (2009 Dealer Appreciation Program)

Added to my collection in March of 2010

MTH 20-65147 Union Pacific 70' "Sunshine Special" Coach Car (2009 Dealer Appreciation Program)

MTH 20-65147 Union Pacific 70' "City of Denver" Diner Car (2009 Dealer Appreciation Program)

MTH 20-65147 Union Pacific 70' "Idaho" Observation Car (2009 Dealer Appreciation Program)

MTH 20-95007 Union Pacific Husky Stack Car

This is a 1998 made car that I picked up on ebay for about $30. This was the first real car that I weathered with an airbrush. I think I did a pretty good job in making it look nice and dirty. I'm sure I'll get better with time though.

MTH 20-96168 Denver Rio Grande Tank Car

Part of the Union Pacific Heritage Series, I couldn't resist picking this baby up. Made in 2007, added to my collection in December of the same year.

MTH 20-97651 MKT 2-Bay Centerflow Hopper #15088

Part of the MTH's "Heritage Series", I figured these would go nicely with my MKT Heritage SD70ACe. Built in 2008, added to my set in October of 2008.

MTH 20-97651 MKT 2-Bay Centerflow Hopper #15084

Just like the one above, but a different road number. Built in 2008, added to my set in October of 2008.

MTH 20-98094 Union Pacific 55 Ton All Steel Drop Bottom Gondola Car (MTHRRC - 2010)

MTH's 2010 club car. Very nicely done with lots of detailing. Made in 2010, added to my set in April of 2010.

MTH 20-98205 Union Pacific Jordan Spreader

This is such an interesting looking car, I couldn't resist buying it. The roads use these, obviously, as snow plows in the winter. However, I've learned that they also have other uses in the warmer months of the year, such as maintaining drainage ditches and so forth. The photo of this car on MTH's website does NOT show the black & white striping on the front, but only solid yellow. I'm guessing that this is because MTH added the stripes after the catalogs had already gone out. Another odd thing is that the real life UP #903143 is noticeably different looking than this rendition. This is a 1998 model, added to my set in April of 2006.

MTH 20-98215 Union Pacific Die-Cast Test Car

MTH doesn't make all the MoW equipment I'd like them to make, but what they do make they always do a great job on. In real life, these scale test cars are used to calibrate the train scales. I found a picture of a few of these on Railroad Picture Archives and MTH replicated the UP version very well. If only MTH would make other MoW equipment like speeders and ballast tampers! I can see it now..."Union Pacific ballast tamper with Proto-Sound 2.0"...wow that would rule! This is a 1999 model, added to my set in March of 2006.

MTH 20-98407 Union Pacific #701206 Corrugated Auto Carrier

These things are huge. They are 20 inches long and over 5 inches tall! I was inspired to buy these 2 carriers because the exact same Union Pacific carriers roll through the CSX yard behind my house all the time. True to their real-life counterparts, these cars are much bigger than any other cars on the track. In fact, the cars have signage all over themselves stating that they exceed normal car size! These cars are intricately detailed and a site to behold. This is a 2004 model, added to my set in November 2005.

MTH 20-98407 Union Pacific #701210 Corrugated Auto Carrier

Just like its twin above, but with a different car number for extra authenticity. Made in 2004, added to my layout in November 2005.

MTH 20-98584 Union Pacific 60' Flat Car w/Trash Containers

From my 2007 vol. 1 catalog order. A nicely built car, and having a train car full of trash give a nice modern day touch to my set. Made in 2007, added to my set in April of 2008.

MTH 20-98728 Union Pacific 47' TTX Heavy Duty Flat Car w/Transformer #50034

Very nicely done. The little sprung hooks that hold the tranformer in place are probably the coolest thing abou these cars. Made in 2010, added to my collection in June 2010.

MTH 20-98728 Union Pacific 47' TTX Heavy Duty Flat Car w/Transformer #50035

Just like the car above, but with a different road number. Made in 2010, added to my collection in June 2010.

Atlas 2001607 Union Pacific Pullman-Standard 4750 #74444

Atlas' Golden Spike Club car for 2012. Looks great! Made in 2012, added to my collection in September of 2012.

MTH 30-7147 Union Pacific Stock Car

My inspiration for buying this car was the postwar 6656 Cattle Car that came from my dad's postwar trains. The 6656 looked so lonely all by itself, so I decide to get another cattle car to keep in company! Like everything else MTH makes, this car is quite good looking and solidly built.

MTH 30-7147 30-7147 Union Pacific Stock Car (#2)

Exactly like the one above. I liked it so much, I got another one. I bought this one and the one above in October of 2005.

MTH 30-73124 Union Pacific 3-Dome Tank Car

This was the 4th MTH freight car that I bought and was one of the factors that made me begin to favor MTH over Lionel. I've grown quite fond of this car and I am thinking about getting 1 or 2 more of the same model. This is a 2004 car, added to my set in October 2005.

MTH 30-74073 Union Pacific Box Car

Another "Route of The Streamliners" car like the Atlas rendition that I have, except this one is the familiar yellow and red colors of Union Pacific. Got this on ebay for $27 in October of 2005.

MTH 30-74122 Union Pacific Rounded Roof Boxcar

Added to my collection in 2005.

MTH 30-7433 Union Pacific 50' Modern Single Door Box Car

This is a very nice looking boxcar that I got brand new off of ebay for around $20. Interestingly, MTH has reissued this car in this year's 2006 catalog as RailKing 30-74332. I like my version better, though, since it has silver trucks instead of the black ones that are on the 2006 model. Not to mention that the new car is $45 in the catalog, so I got this one for more than 50% less.

MTH 30-7469 Union Pacific 50' Double Door Plugged Boxcar

This is a 2001 model, added to my set in March of 2006.

MTH 30-79004 Union Pacific Fire Car

I haven't seen a lot of these around, so I snatched this up when I found it. It's just a neat little car, with all sorts of detail on it. It's got a little more plastic than I would like, but it's still a great car. This is a 1999 model, added to my set in March of 2006.

Atlas 3001111-1 Union Pacific (CMO) Trinity 5161 cu. ft. Covered Hopper #21435

These trinity hoppers are gorgeous. Added to my set in March of 2011.

Atlas 3001111-2 Union Pacific (CMO) Trinity 5161 cu. ft. Covered Hopper #21570

Added to my set in March of 2011.

Atlas 3001111-3 Union Pacific (CMO) Trinity 5161 cu. ft. Covered Hopper #21610

Added to my set in March of 2011

Atlas 3001111-4 Union Pacific (CMO) Trinity 5161 cu. ft. Covered Hopper #21631

Added to my set in March of 2011.

Lionel 6-16068 Union Pacific "Romeo" Baggage Car (6068)

I bought this set of 5 cars in the early 90's. They are great looking and well built.

Lionel 6-16069 Union Pacific "New Haven" Combo Car (6069

Added to my collection in the early 90's

Lionel 6-16070 Union Pacific "Plainfield" Pullman Car (6070)

Added to my collection in the early 90's

Lionel 6-16072 Union Pacific "St. Clair Shores" Vista Dome Car (6072)

Added to my collection in the early 90's

Lionel 6-16074 Union Pacific "Livingston" Observation Car (6074)

Added to my collection in the 90's

Lionel 6-18490 Union Pacific Ballast Tamper

Pretty much useless on my DCS layout for right now., but still a neat little gadget. The little tampers move up and down as the unit moves. I'd like to eventually upgrade this to TMCC. Added to my collection in March of 2006.

Lionel 6-26132 Union Pacific Single Dome Tanker

picked this up at a local train store recently. This is a beautiful die-cast car and was instantly one of my favorites. It's not a scale car, but it's still very nice.

Lionel 6-26943 Union Pacific Oil Die-Cast Tank Car

Almost 100% die-cast metal construction, this 1998 tanker is just lovely. It's heavy as hell and has those nice sprung trucks. This beauty easily stacks up to anything that the postwar era cranked out.

Lionel 6-27929 Union Pacific O27 Streamlined Anniversary Passenger Car 2-Pack

I got these as an add-on to the UP Anniversary Set that I bought. Made in 2012, added to my collection in January of 2013.

Lionel 6-81142 Vision Line Pacific Fruit Express Steel-Sided Reefer 3-Pack

The latest freight offerings from Lionel's Vision Line. Equipped with sounds and features to enhance the entire trains, these cars are exceptionally cool. Made in 2015, added my collection in June of 2015.

Lionel 6-82394 Union Pacific Auxiliary Water Tender

This is an auxiliary water tender, meant to be paired up with the Vision Line Big Boy. Built in 2014, added to my collection in July of 2015.

Lionel 6-82396 Union Pacific Commemorative Edition Auxiliary Water Tender #907857

These were made my Lionel to be coupled with the Vision Line Big Boy. I now have 2 of these. I picked this one up at the York train meet. They look great. Made in 2014, added to my collection in October of 2015.

Lionel 6-84232 UNION PACIFIC THEATER CAR - FOX RIVER

This theater car has a wireless camera mounted on the inside to capture video as the train makes its journey around the layout. Nifty idea! Cataloged in 2017, added to my collection in November 2018.

Atlas 6292-1 Union Pacific #880000 Articulated Auto Carrier

I got the Norfolk Southern version of this car (below) first and I liked it so much that I picked up this UP rendition. There's another Norfolk Southern one out there that I want to pick at some point. These are awesome pieces. Added to my set in January 2007.

Atlas 6485-6 Union Pacific #181668 Box Car

I use 100% Atlas track for my layout, but this was my first Atlas rolling stock purchase. This car is part of the Atlas "Steam Era Classics" collection. It's a little out of place on my diesel layout, but I doubt the model industry police will kick up too much fuss about it. I'm impressed with the quality and attention to detail. You know they are serious about detail when the INSIDE floor of the car is textured to look like wood. The underside of the car is also very detailed. I'm sure I will add more Atlas rolling stock to my layout in time, but I'll be sure to choose from their more modern lines next time. I definitely give Atlas the thumbs up! Purchased October 2005.

K-Line K6333-2112A K-Line Union Pacific Aluminum Tank Car 3-pack

This was a custom run done for The Train Loft in Winston-Salem, NC. They are, as the title states, aluminum cars which makes them nice and heavy. Beautifully done. It's a shame K-Line went under. Built in 2001, added to my set in July 2007.

K-Line K761-2114 K-Line Union Pacific Classic Express Boxcar

When I found out that K-Line had gone belly up, I figured I'd grab a few of their cars while they are around. Naturally, I got Union Pacific.

K-Line K765-2111 K-Line Union Pacific Classic Boxcar

It's really too bad K-Line is out of business, as I was really starting to take a liking to their products. I think Lionel may be getting their K-Line's toolings, so hopefully some of their stuff will live again. From what I've read, a lot of K-Line's toolings were acquired from other extinct train makers like Marx and the like. Personally, I think that snatching up the toolings of companies that went under is bad Karma.

Weaver U12013 Union Pacific 57' Mechanical Reefer

I like this car a lot. It's very delicate, just like most styrene Weaver cars I've seen, but it's very intricately detailed. Very realistic looking!
