I'm convinced that this set is MTH's answer to Atlas' amazing Gunderson Twin Stack sets. Considering that it's pretty damn near impossible to beat Atlas' Twin Stacks (or anything Atlas makes, for that matter), I think MTH did a very good job. The detailing is very well done. One area where the MTH version falls short is that most of the model is plastic whereas most of the Atlas model is die-cast metal. MTH's model, however, does offer a couple nice advantages over the Atlas version. First, I personally like the way MTH did the fasteners that couple each car together. They're much easier to work than the Atlas versions. Secondly, I like that the MTH version comes with the container loads. The Atlas model does not come with the containers. They have to bought seperately for $25 piece. Purists will probably argue that the Atlas car fasterners are more prototypical and that allowing you to buy the containers seperately allows for more customization, but I'm not a purist. I think MTH did a good all-around job with these and I'm happy to own them. This is a 2007 model, added to my set in August of 2008. |
