Eric's Modern O-Scale Trains

Atlas Engines & Rolling Stock

Engines | Rolling Stock | Back to Modern Trains

On this page you will find my entire roster of Atlas O Engines and Rolling Stock. Atlas has quickly become one my favorite brands of O gauge stuff. The one word that comes to mind when I think of Atlas stuff is "exquisite". Their cars and engines are some of the most amazingly detailed and well built products on the market. The craftsmanship that goes into everything they make is truly remarkable. Atlas' motto is "We ship no product before its time", and I'd say they stick that that rule. You won't find any half-baked ideas in an Atlas box. I'm always so impressed by any new Atlas product that I get. And then, just when I think I've seen it all, they amaze me again when the next product comes out. Atlas O products are usually slightly more expensive than other brands, but they are well worth it.

Atlas Engines (3 items, sorted by model number)

Atlas 1515-1 FURX SD40 Diesel Locomotive #3022 w/TMCC

I ordered this from the Atlas Summer 2007 catalog. This was my first Atlas engine. I've always seen FURX engines around Atlanta but could never find an O-scale version, so I was overjoyed when I saw that Atlas was going to make these. Just like their rolling stock, this Atlas engine blew me away as far as attention to detail goes. This is by far the most detailed diesel engine I own. Even the packaging is amazing. Inside the box, the engine was attached to a plastic display shelf for extra protection. Now if only it used DCS instead of TMCC. Well, I can dream. You can check out a video of this engine in action right here. Made in 2007 and added to my collection in February 2008.

Atlas 1515-2 FURX SD40 Diesel Locomotive #3036 w/TMCC

Just like the engine above, but with a different road number. Atlas usually makes 2 powered numbers and 1 unpowered number of each engine and I just had to get all 3 of these FURX units. Make in 2007, added to my set in November 2007.

Atlas 1565-1 FURX SD40 Diesel Locomotive #3032 (non-powered)

Just like above, except non-powered and with a different cab number. Even in the unpowered engine category, Atlas blows away the competition. Not only does this unpowered unit have lighting, but it has 4 switches on the bottom that let you turn on/off the front headlight, front marker lights, rear headlight and rear marker lights to suit your needs. Thank you, Atlas!

Atlas Rolling Stock (39 items, sorted by model number)

Atlas 6292-1 Union Pacific #880000 Articulated Auto Carrier

I got the Norfolk Southern version of this car (below) first and I liked it so much that I picked up this UP rendition. There's another Norfolk Southern one out there that I want to pick at some point. These are awesome pieces. Added to my set in January 2007.

Atlas 6293-9 Norfolk Southern #110111 Articulated Auto Carrier

It's huge and incredibly detailed. This was my second Atlas rolling stock purchase and I have to say I'm quickly becoming an Atlas O fan. Their stuff seems to have more detail than Lionel or MTH in many cases and I love the rotating bearing caps on the trucks. They make it look that much more prototypical. Added to my set in November 2006.

Atlas 6317-1 CSX 3 Bay Cylindrical Hopper #226014

I got this car and it's brother below off of ebay from AM Hobbies in Pennsylvania. I really like the attention to detail on Atlas rolling stock and I especially like the opening hatches on top! These cars were made in 2006 and added to my set in November of 2006.

Atlas 6317-2 CSX 3 Bay Cylindrical Hopper #226018

Just like the car above, but a different number.

Atlas 6321-1 Conrail 3 Bay Cylindrical Hopper #884812

I loved the CSX cylindrical hoppers from Atlas so much that I snatched up the Conrail version as well. For some reason, Atlas only makes 2 numbers when it comes to these hoppers, which is unfortunate since they are so awesome. Fortunately, though, I have both numbers. Built in 2007, added to my set in June of 2007.

Atlas 6321-1 Conrail 3 Bay Cylindrical Hopper #885217

Just like the Conrail hopper above, but with a different car number. Built in 2007, added to my set in June of 2007.

Atlas 6485-6 Union Pacific #181668 Box Car

I use 100% Atlas track for my layout, but this was my first Atlas rolling stock purchase. This car is part of the Atlas "Steam Era Classics" collection. It's a little out of place on my diesel layout, but I doubt the model industry police will kick up too much fuss about it. I'm impressed with the quality and attention to detail. You know they are serious about detail when the INSIDE floor of the car is textured to look like wood. The underside of the car is also very detailed. I'm sure I will add more Atlas rolling stock to my layout in time, but I'll be sure to choose from their more modern lines next time. I definitely give Atlas the thumbs up! Purchased October 2005.

Atlas 8141-4 Coors 40' Wood Reefer Car #5417

I picked this car and the one below up while in Golden, Co. I bought this one at the Colorado Train Museum, the other at the Coors brewery gift shop. I'm not sure when Atlas made these, but I added them to my set in September of 2007.

Atlas 8141-9 Coors 40' Wood Reefer Car #5413

I'm not sure when Atlas made these, but I added them to my set in September of 2007. These old style reefers are out of place in my modern themed collection, but they we're so nice that I couldn't resist picking up a couple of them.

Atlas 8195 Clicquot Club 40' Wood Reefer Car #1427 (Exclusive for 2007 Golden Spike Club)

This car was the 2007 Golden Spike Club issue car. Like I said, just when I think I've seen it all from Atlas they always blow me away with something even better. Even though this 1920's car is completely out of place on my layout, it's one of the most amazingly detailed cars I've seen. From top to bottom, this car is simply a work of art. There are too many subtle details to list here, but I can summarize it all by letting you know that the car actually comes with a warning label that reads, "Please Note: This car is highly detailed. Use care when removing it from styrofoam". That about says it all. This is a 2007 car, added to my set in August of the same year.

Atlas 8276-3 ADM 17,600 Gallon Corn Syrup Tank Car #16143

The most exquisitely detailed tank cars I've ever seen, hands down. I had to snatch up as many of these as I could. By the way, if it looks like the car is bent in the middle, it is. The prototypes of these cars care slightly bent in the middle to allow the contents to flow out better. It's attention to these subtle details that make Atlas products so awesome. Made in 2007, added to my set in May of 2007.

Atlas 8278-1 GATX 17,600 Gallon Corn Syrup Tank Car #73127

I started off with the 8278-4 version of this car (below) and was able to find the other 3 numbers thanks to Bob Lawrence over at Atlas. One thing's for sure. When I'm done getting all these tankers I'm going to have one hell of a unit train. Made in 2007, added to my set in June of 2007.

Atlas 8278-2 GATX 17,600 Gallon Corn Syrup Tank Car #73135

Made in 2007, added to my set in June of 2007.

Atlas 8278-3 GATX 17,600 Gallon Corn Syrup Tank Car #73164

Atlas 8278-4 GATX 17,600 Gallon Corn Syrup Tank Car #73171

Atlas 8280-2 TrueSweet 17,600 Gallon Corn Syrup Tank Car #65231

Made in 2007, added to my set in May of 2007.

Atlas 8280-3 TrueSweet 17,600 Gallon Corn Syrup Tank Car #65245

Made in 2007, added to my set in May of 2007.

Atlas 8280-4 TrueSweet 17,600 Gallon Corn Syrup Tank Car #65250

Can you tell that I love these tank cars yet? Made in 2007, added to my set in May of 2007.

Atlas 8281-1 ADM 17,600 Gallon Corn Syrup Tank Car #15746

I snatched these up from the Atlas Summer 2007 catalog. I can't get enough of these tankers. Made in 2007, added to my collection in November of 2007.

Atlas 8281-2 ADM 17,600 Gallon Corn Syrup Tank Car #15750

Made in 2007, added to my collection in November of 2007.

Atlas 8283-4 Cargill (UTCI Repaint) 17,600 Gallon Corn Syrup Tank Car #5885

Made in 2007, added to my collection in November of 2007.

Atlas 8633-1 Norfolk & Western 60' Berwick Hy-Cube Box Car #604524

Much like I said with the Atlas tank cars above, these Hy-Cube cars are about the best I've ever seen. Detailed to perfection and expertly painted. The only down side is that the doors don't open. But that's a small price to pay for such an amazing work of art. This car was a special model that came equipped with large cat ears on top! Made in 2007, added to my set in July 2007.

Atlas 8633-2 Norfolk & Western 60' Berwick Hy-Cube Box Car #604530

Just like the NW car above, but with a different car number. Made in 2007, added to my set in July 2007.

Atlas 8633-3 Norfolk & Western 60' Berwick Hy-Cube Box Car #604536

Just like the NW car above, but with a different car number. Made in 2007, added to my set in July 2007.

Atlas 8633-4 Norfolk & Western 60' Berwick Hy-Cube Box Car #604539

Just like the NW car above, but with a different car number. Made in 2007, added to my set in July 2007.

Atlas 8863 Napierville Junction 50' PS-1 Plug Door Box Car #801 (Exclusive for 2008 Golden Spike Club)

Atlas' 2008 Golden Spike Club offering. As is typical for Atlas items, this car is exquisitely detailed. It's also quite heavy as well. The detailing on the underside of the car is probably my favorite part. Made in 2008, added to my collection in July of 2008.

Atlas 8910-2 BNSF #236074 Gunderson Stack Car A-B Set

I first picked up the CSX rendition of this set (below) and was so impressed with it that I ran out and grabbed the BNSF version as well. I'd also like to pick up the middle C-D-E sets that attach to these units and makes them even longer. Hats off to Atlas for going all out on these sweet sets. This is a 2007 release, added to my set in April of the same year.

Atlas 8912-2 Conrail #795103 Gunderson Stack Car A-B Set

My 3rd Gunderson Stack set from Atlas. These are simply amazing. Made in 2007, added to my set in December 2007.

Atlas 8914-1 CSX/SeaLand #620241 Gunderson Stack Car A-B Set

Wow. These are a new release from Atlas for 2007. They are hands down the best thing I've seen from Atlas as far as O scale freight cars go. They are exquisitely detailed and mostly constructed of die-cast metal! Basically, the entire bottom portion of the car is metal and the only plastic pieces on here are the very top sections and some of the detailing. With so much metal on board, these things have a very nice weight to them. If you pick one up for yourself, be very careful as the extraordinary detailing of these cars makes them VERY fragile. Also, the intermodal containers are sold separately and do not come with the set and they are $25 a piece, so outfitting one of these babies is pretty costly. You do not, however, HAVE to buy their containers. The cars have adjustment flaps and will accommodate most containers made by other manufacturers. The picture you see here shows my Weaver containers fitting with no trouble at all. I've also got some K-Line and MTH containers that fit in there as well. If you do buy some of the Atlas containers, that $25 gets you containers that are just as expertly detailed as the cars themselves. Absolutely remarkable! This is a 2007 model, added to my set in March of the same year.
